Heritage Crumble Topping

A simple, buttery crumble made with Heritage Baker's Flour and lightly sweetened with Homestead Sweetener. Bakes into golden clusters with delicate crisp edges and a tender center—perfect over fruit pies, baked custards, or roasted seasonal fruit.

FORAGE BAKER'S NOTES

Flour matters. Gluten-free flour blends—and even traditional wheat flours—can vary widely in weight per cup, which is why we always recommend using a kitchen scale whenever possible.

If measuring by volume, gently scoop Heritage Baker's Flour into a measuring cup and level with a knife. This yields approximately 125g per cup. Packing the cup can result in excess flour and a denser topping, while spooning may under-measure.

HOMESTEAD SWEETENER

Sweeteners matter too. Sweeteners significantly affect texture and browning. For best results, we recommend Homestead Sweetener or traditional sugar.

  • Homestead Sweetener: 140g per cup (1:1 sugar replacement by volume)
  • Granulated Sugar: 200g per cup

INGREDIENTS

  • 1½ cups (187g) Heritage Baker's Flour
  • ⅓ cup (47g) Homestead Sweetener
  • 6 tablespoons (84g) melted butter, cooled slightly
  • 1–2 teaspoons vanilla extract or water
  • ¼–½ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Preheat oven to 325°F.
  • In a small bowl, combine Heritage Baker's Flour and Homestead Sweetener.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter and vanilla extract (or water).
  • Pour the butter mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until a crumbly texture forms. The mixture should hold together when pressed in your hand, then break apart into clusters.
  • Crumble over prepared pie filling before baking, or spread loosely on a sheet pan and bake until golden for a standalone dessert topping.
